Yoweri Museveni, popularly called as 'Sevo' by Ugandans, is the president of Uganda for 35 years. He is known as liberator and harbinger of peace when he liberated the country on 26 January 1986 with his army National Resistance Army. In the early years of his power, he denied remaining in power for a whole life. The 1995 Constitution also put holds on the president to remain in power after 2005 and put age limit to 75 years. But with coming years both of these restraints were removed. Now the 76-year old president is again contesting for power for the 6th term in the election which is due on 14 January 2021. To remain in power he needs 50% + 1 vote. To remain in power for this long period, he sidelined the rising opposition leaders, compromised institutions like judiciary, media. When asked about his plans to exit from power, he replied," How can I go out of a banana plantation I have planted that has started bearing fruits".
A major challenge to Yoweri in this election is Bob-wine, a pop singer who has huge youth following. It has been a history whoever stood up against Yoweri Museveni is always sidelined by him by using the army, putting false accusations like treason, rape, etc. He is much-respected in the eyes of Ugandans whom he called Bazukulu, means grandchildren. He started his campaign form the last election itself by building roads and infrastructure, by providing employment, etc.
