Following the development of the Omicron version of Covid 19, a lawyer petitioned the Indian Supreme Court, seeking that the Election Commission of India adopt tight rules, regulations, and directions for the practical enforcement and adherence to Covid-19 protocols during future state elections. Further instructions and orders to instruct and order political parties to conduct promotional efforts via internet media have been requested. The petition was filed in relation to the five Indian states of Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, stating that the states have scheduled state elections for February-March 2022, and that large-scale public campaigning, promotional activities, and processions organised by various political parties in preparation for the elections are currently underway.
The orders were sought in a PIL filed earlier this year by Advocate Vishal Tiwari, who sought directions to start rules and stick to the tight covid-19 standards during occasions like as elections and the Kumbh Mela.
