A few days before the report on the Nambi Naryanan case was submitted in the Supreme Court. The Union of India is an applicant in the case and pleaded to accept the report and take action against the erring officers.
Nambi Narayanan was a scientist in the ISRO at the Cryogenic department. In 1994, he was detained by the Kerala police and Intelligence Bureau on the allegations of espionage and booked under the Official Secrets Act. He was detained till 1998 and was acquitted of all charges. The Supreme Court granted Rs. 50 lakh compensation and NHRC gave Rs 10 lakh as interim relief.
The committee was formed by the Supreme Court and Justice DK Jain was appointed its head. The committee submitted the report in a sealed cover a few days back. The Union of India appealed to follow the suggestions and take steps against the erring police officers as mentioned in the report.
The Nambi Narayana contended that it was malicious action and caused great harassment to him and the violation of Article 21.
