The Election Commission of India (ECI) has not submitted a proposal to establish online voting in the forthcoming general elections, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said parliament on Friday.
On the fifth day of the winter session of Parliament, Rijiju was responding to an unstarred question from BJP Member of Parliament from Rajasthan, Dushyant Singh.
In his question, Singh inquired whether the central government was aware of Telangana's phone-app-based voting experiment and whether it had received any proposals to implement e-voting in the approaching general elections.
"No such proposal has been received from the Election Commission of India, and so the issue of resources used for the same does not arise," Rijiju noted in his response.
It was also claimed that the ECI does not have any information on the use of block chain technology in overseas elections.
The Supreme Court is considering a petition to implement e-voting through the use of a "protected remote electronic voting system," which would allow residents to vote online.
According to a petition filed by K Sathyan, a resident of Kerala, who was represented by counsel Kaleeswaram Raj, the electoral legislation has to be updated to reflect modern times and technology. The petition also requested that an OTP-based system for error-free voter identification be developed, as well as the installation of CCTV cameras in all voting stations around the country.
