KARNATAKA ASSEMBLY; BILL AGAINST COW SLAUGHTER

    in News Updates

The Karnataka Legislative Assembly passed the Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation (Amendment) Bill, 2020 prohibiting slaughter of cows, buffalos, and bulls below 13 years of age.

The Amendment Bill provides between three and seven years imprisonment and/or a fine up to ₹5 lakh. Subsequent offences can invite fines up to ₹10 lakh, and a jail term of up to seven years. In 2010, the BJP government had passed a similar legislation when it was in power. However, the law was shelved after the Congress government came to power in 2013.
