    Impose hefty fines to stop public spitting: Bombay HC to Maharashtra govt

    The bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice GS Kulkarni directed the municipalities and Maharashtra government to charge hefty fines to stop the menace of spitting, especially during COVID-19 times. The court noted that under the Bombay Police Act fines worth Rs 1200 can be imposed and then also Rs 200 charges are imposed.


    The PIL was filed by a Mumbai resident, Armin Wandrewala to give directions to the state to end this menace. Spitting increases the spread of Corona. Taking this into consideration the Court directed the government and municipalities to take immediate steps.


    The Court also give directions to start a mass campaign against this menace and regarding this steps should be taken within 7 days. The court told authorities to inform the Court about the measures taken and to be taken in future on April 21.
