Bitcoin fell 7.4% to $40,631.78 at 2205 GMT on Thursday, a loss of $3,248.05 from the previous closing.
Bitcoin, the world's most popular cryptocurrency, is down 15.3% from its year-to-date high of $47,989 set on January 2.
On Thursday, the cryptocurrency linked to the ethereum blockchain network, lost 7.43 per cent to $2,891.32, a loss of $231.92 from its previous closing.
